IMBONGI WILL GO NEXT FOR SUMMER MILE

IMBONGI, who drifted from 3-1 to 8-1 before Saturday’s Criterion Stakes (Group 3) at Newmarket, gave his rivals a galloping lesson in the straight 1400m race.

It is written on racingweb’s forum that a popular UK bookmaker publicly suggested that Imbongi was his “lay of the day” which could have resulted in the drift, but what’s important is that he did come home in good fashion for Mike de Kock and Kevin Shea.

“It’s exciting,” Shea told reporters. “He stumbled, came out almost on his nose and recovered well to win easily.”

Mike de Kockk, commenting from Durban, said: “Imbongi will probably go next for the Summer Mile, the race at Ascot we won with Archipenko last year. It’s been a good season, we’ve had two winners and two places from four runners.”

Shea himself is getting a it more support from UK trainers and he’s ridden three winners from limited opportunities this season.

Imbongi, Summerhill-bred, is raced by Sheik Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Mick Goss, Ronnie and Bev Napier, Mike Fleischer, Owen Leibbrandt and Barry Clements.
